Shovansundar Bosu has been a permanent artiste of All India Radio (AIR) since 1984. Over the years, he advanced to the role of Moderator for recitation and spoken-word programs, contributing significantly to both AIR and Doordarshan Kendra, Kolkata.
A trailblazer in Bengali performing arts, Shovansundar revolutionized the landscape of Bengali recitation and poetry performance by incorporating live instrumentation and rhythmic elements on stage.
He is the pioneer behind BRISHTI, India’s first and only recitation and poetry performance band. Setting a new trend in the art form, BRISHTI presents the works of veteran, modern, and postmodern poets accompanied by live music. In 2003, Saregama HMV released an audio CD of BRISHTI, marking a milestone in Bengali poetry performance.
In 2005, Saregama HMV produced the first-ever visual CD on Bengali poetry recitation, featuring Shovansundar’s work. This groundbreaking project was directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Raja Sen, making it a historic collaboration in the realm of Bengali recitation.
In 2009, the pioneering ‘Kobita Concert’ took place in Kolkata, marking the first-ever concert dedicated exclusively to Bengali poetry. This groundbreaking event featured Shovansundar sharing the stage with the globally acclaimed percussionist Bickram Ghosh, cementing poetry performance as a mainstream artistic pursuit.
His innovation continued with Rhythms of Tagore, the first audio CD dedicated to Rabindranath Tagore’s poetry, where Bickram Ghosh conceptualized, directed, and composed the music for Shovansundar’s recitation. This landmark project was released by Asha Audio in 2015.
In 2017, Ruposhi Bangla, a leading Bengali satellite channel, featured Shovansundar as the host and performer of their popular Sunday morning show, ‘Aaji e Robir Provate—Sange Shovansundar’, further cementing his influence in the domain of Bengali spoken word and performance.
In 2022, Shovansundar, in collaboration with renowned psychiatrist Dr. Debanjan Pan, pioneered the introduction of Poetry Therapy in India. This groundbreaking initiative marked the first-ever endeavor of its kind in the country.
Poetry Therapy harnesses the transformative power of poetry and the spoken word to foster therapeutic healing. As a form of expressive arts therapy, this innovative approach utilizes poetry to address a wide range of psychological issues and conditions.
